COHO Fall Institute
The Craniofacial and Oral Health Online (COHO) Fall Institute in Clinical Research Methods is a multi-week research training program for dental and craniofacial providers and dentists offered through Seattle Children’s Craniofacial Center and the University of Washington, and funded by Smile Train. This interactive training program is intended for early-career dental and craniofacial faculty from around the world who work in academic, public health and other settings where research is conducted with review and approval by a human ethics committee. Participants will gain knowledge on clinical research methods they may not otherwise have exposure to during their academic or professional training.
Tuition is $1,000 for the entire program. If you are a Smile Train partner, please note the cost will be covered by Smile Train.
The next COHO Fall Institute will take place Sept. 5 to Nov. 2, 2023. The course will follow an online format covering one module per week, for eight weeks total.
The application deadline is Aug. 7, 2023. Please note that only a limited number of participants will be accepted.

Participation Requirements
Participants must complete the entire program, consisting of eight modules, in order to receive a certificate of completion. The program is estimated to take four hours per week, and one module topic will be covered each week.
Each module includes a 75-minute live, interactive session on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:15 a.m. Pacific time. Modules also include activities such as:
- Short, pre-recorded video lectures
- Applied assignments
- Quizzes
- Interactive discussions with instructors and other participants
- Live office hours with instructors

Preparing the Next Generation of Oral Health Researchers
Alumni of the program represent over 50 countries from around the world.
The COHO Institute is the only research training program of its kind. Providing a gateway into clinical research, the program trains the next generation of oral health researchers, enabling them to help answer questions to improve the oral health of their communities.
To date, over 600 participants from more than 50 counties have successfully completed the program.
Graduates often go on to become oral health researchers in the U.S. and around the world, holding supervisory roles such as department chairs, deans and chairs of research, and many have been funded by the National Institutes of Health.
