What to Expect
Clinic Visit
-
Before your appointment
- Complete any forms you’ve received from us before you arrive at our clinic. Please bring them with you to your child’s appointment.
- Bring medical insurance cards or a valid medical coupon for the month of your appointment. To avoid having to pay for a visit, please bring all referrals.
- Ask your child’s primary care provider for any prior lab results related to your child’s condition, including ultrasounds, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans and blood work, and bring them with you. This helps avoid duplication of tests.
- Ask your child’s primary care provider to fax your child’s records to us at 206-985-3499.
- Please plan to check in 15 minutes before your child’s appointment. If you arrive more than 20 minutes late, we may need to reschedule.

Who will see my child?
Seattle Children’s is a teaching hospital. Your child will receive care from a team that may include:
-
What happens during a clinic visit?
- We meet to discuss you or your child’s symptoms and past medical history. We will also discuss your concerns and goals for the visit.
- We review any imaging or lab work related to the visit.
- We may recommend a pelvic examination for certain patients. This may involve looking at the outside of the pelvic area or performing an internal examination. We have shared decision making about when an exam is important. We will honor you or your child's request if you would prefer not to have the pelvic exam.
- We will discuss the possible causes of symptoms and whether further testing is necessary. We will also discuss treatment options.
-
How long is a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology visit?
A new visit typically takes about 1 hour, but may last longer depending on the reason for the visit. A follow-up appointment typically takes about 30 minutes. The appointment time may increase if your child is seeing providers from multiple specialties.
-
What should we bring to the appointment?
- Clinic notes or reports.
- Your child’s medicines or a list of medicines. Include nonprescription items like vitamins. Include name, dose and instructions.
- Your child’s medical equipment.
- Any forms that might need to be signed by our providers like forms for medicines that need to be taken at school.
- Ultrasounds or MRIs on a CD and reports of blood work and other tests.
- Snacks for your child if your appointment runs longer than planned.
-
What can I expect as a parent or caregiver?
The goal of the visit is to ensure that your child is healthy. We recognize that many adolescents may have questions that they would like to ask but may not want to ask in front of family. We start the visit with the adolescent and parent or caregiver together. We then spend time with the adolescent to answer questions. They can then decide who they would like present if an examination is necessary. If the parent or caregiver is not already in the room for the exam, we will meet with you and your child to discuss next steps after the exam.
-
What will happen after the appointment?
We may need to see your child for follow-up visits depending on their diagnosis and treatment plan. We will make sure you leave the appointment with detailed instructions about what will happen next and try to answer all of your questions. We will provide you with phone numbers to call us if you have questions after you leave.
-
How will we find out about my child’s test results?
We will usually send results in the mail or through the electronic patient portal. If there are any issues that require additional discussion, we will either call or set up another appointment to go over the results in detail.
-
