Biography
Benjamin S. Wilfond, MD, is an investigator at the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics and Palliative Care and a pulmonologist at Seattle Children's Hospital. He is a professor in the Divisions of Bioethics & Palliative Care and Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, University of Washington School of Medicine. He founded and is former division chief of Bioethics and Palliative Care and former director of the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics and Palliative Care, the first such programs in the U.S.
Dr. Wilfond is the research ethics case co-editor of the American Journal of Bioethics and on the editorial boards of the Hastings Center Report, Ethics and Human Research, and Journal of Genetic Counseling. He a is member of the FDA Pediatrics Advisory Committee and the Standing Committee on Ethics, Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He is an elected member of the American Pediatric Society and a fellow of the Hastings Center. He is a past president of the Association of Bioethics Program Directors. He founded and is the former chair of National Human Genome Research Institute intramural IRB, and founded and is the former chair of Clinical Research Ethics Consultation Collaborative, a national network to advance the practice of bioethics consultation in the research context. Dr. Wilfond attended Muhlenberg College, Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School, and completed his postgraduate training at the University of Wisconsin. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Arizona, National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins University.

As a pulmonologist, I currently care for children with chronic lung diseases related to prematurity. I see families while they are in the NICU and then follow them once they go home. I also have a particular interest in caring for children with lung problems related to complications of developmental disabilities. As medical ethicist, I focus on issues related to parental decision making for clinical care and the use of genetics technologies in both clinical care and research.

For 30 years, Dr. Wilfond has engaged in social science research and conceptual scholarship related to ethical and policy issues at the research/clinical care interface. His current focus relates to improving access for diverse communities to advanced technologies including genomic sequencing, cellular therapeutics, and home mechanical ventilation and to increasing engagement with diverse communities about clinical research, with a focus on pragmatic research conducted within the context of health care delivery systems.
