  • Biography

I enjoy solving relevant problems with practical solutions that achieve real outcomes. My program of research is in evidence-based applications to science. I have served as the Director of the Research and Innovation Center at UCSD Health Sciences coordinating campus wide resources to help facilitate the development and commercialization of various innovation within the Department of Anesthesiology. In my current position, I have brought the same strategic vision and am currently engaged with several innovators throughout Seattle Children’s Hospital facilitating the development and prototyping of medical device innovations.

I began translating research to practice through evidence-based innovation with the development and commercialization of the Vidatak EZ Board in 2003. Uncertain of how to best meet the communication needs of intubated patients, I launched a research initiative to uncover exactly what intervention would fulfill this specific gap in knowledge and practice. With two years of research with intubated patients and rigorous end-user assessment and testing, all of the specifications that impact utility were identified and implemented. As demand grew, the Vidatak EZ Board required multiple translations and underwent five reiterations after further research identified new specifications, which would improve both user and care provider satisfaction. Due to the unique patient-centric, evidence-based approach taken in the process of developing the EZ Board, the EZ Board (US Patent No. 6,422,875) is now sold in 20 different languages and Picture format, in 7 countries around the world, with just over 2 million units sold.

I expanded on this effort and led successful development and commercialization of Eloquence with funding support from a successful Phase I and Phase II STTR (MD006149) using an iterative research and development process to ensure all end users, from patient to administrators, experienced an impact on end user related outcomes. Eloquence is a multilingual, touchscreen nurse call communication system for patients to deliver specific messages to their providers in lieu of the traditional one-in-all nurse call button found on traditional pillow speakers. Subsequently, I led successful development and commercialization of VidaTalk with additional funding support from a successful Phase I and Phase II STTR (NR014087), again using an iterative design process ensuring that critically-ill patients would be able to successfully navigate the technology and achieve outcomes effectiveness.
