Program Overview

Seattle Children's has an international reputation for excellence in clinical care, research and teaching, and serves as the primary tertiary facility for pediatric care in the Pacific Northwest. Fellows in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry have a unique opportunity to work with the largest provider of mental health services for children in the region; patients are referred from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has a commitment to provide services for and conduct research in populations of underserved, severely ill children and adolescents treated in the public sector. Our fellowship has a long-standing reputation and was first offered in 1962.

The first year is divided into five rotation periods that are ten to eleven weeks long on the following rotations. Two rotation periods training on the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (previously the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit), and one rotation period on the Consult/Liaison Service at Seattle Children's, one at the Child Study and Treatment Center, the state's long-term psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents, and one on our Outpatient Rotation, which includes training time in the Eating Disorders Clinic, the Anxiety Clinic, the Autism Center, and the Neurology Clinic. For the full year there is one day per week at the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at Seattle Children's.

During the second year, fellows continue their outpatient care clinic work, with an emphasis on long-term care at Seattle Children's. Fellows also have training at Echo Glen Children's Center and provide one day per month consultation to one of Seattle’s school health clinics. Fellows choose from several community consultation electives. There is considerable elective time in the second year to focus on individual areas of interest.

There are opportunities for fellows to participate in research, including major research programs in depression, early onset psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome and autism.
