Program Overview

The Pediatric Neurosurgery fellowship at Seattle Children's Hospital and the University of Washington is a one year, post-residency fellowship certified by the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery. The goal of the fellowship is to prepare the fellow for a career in academic pediatric neurosurgery through an emphasis on excellence in patient care, development of technical skills, and learning a spirit of academic inquiry across pediatric neurosurgical disease. As a board-eligible neurosurgeon, the fellow joins our faculty and participates in the inpatient and outpatient care of neonates, infants and children. The objectives are outstanding clinical outcomes, engagement in our quality and safety efforts (e.g., shunt infection reduction protocols), participation in education of our residents, and publications that advance the scholarship of pediatric neurosurgery.

We have nationally recognized clinical programs in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery including brain tumors, craniofacial disorders, epilepsy surgery, Chiari malformations, cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. The neurosurgery program is the university-associated referral destination for the five state WWAMI program. Fellows are attendings in the operating room, inpatient service, and outpatient clinic. Fellow participation is particularly important in our multidisciplinary clinics including brain tumor, craniofacial, and myelomeningocele/birth defects clinics. We have a highly collaborative interaction with our colleagues in these clinics as well as in epilepsy, general neurology, rehabilitation, surgical hospitalists, neuropathology and neuroradiology.

Fellows can work with leaders in a variety of fields of study. Active neurosurgical projects include in brain tumor research, a variety of neuroscience collaborations with the Center for Integrative Brain Research, advanced imaging methods (e.g., CSF flow, DTI, fcMRI), and outcome studies. Our faculty are members of editorial boards of major journals and play prominent roles in organized neurosurgery, especially the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery. We are particularly proud of our work in clinical and research consortia, such as the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network and the Park-Reeves syringomyelia consortium. Our fellow graduates are academically productive, place in desirable faculty positions following the fellowship, and are emerging leaders in the field.

• Prerequisites/post-medical school requirements: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, completed chief residency in an approved neurosurgery program, qualify for Washington state medical license
• Application deadline: August 1
