Salary for residents in each year of training are approved annually by the Washington State Legislature.

Washington does not have a state income tax.

Medical, Dental and Life Insurance
Major medical, dental, basic life, accident and long-term disability insurance plans are provided to all house staff and their dependents through the University of Washington. Optional supplemental life insurance and a flexible spending account for medical expenses are available. (See benefits summary PDFs.)
Retirement Plans
The UW Retirement Plan is a fully portable, tax-deferred, defined contribution plan. Employee contribution is based on age and is matched 100% by the university. You may enroll at the date of appointment but will be automatically enrolled two years from the date of appointment. Additional tax-deferred retirement savings can be deducted through the Voluntary Investment Program, a 403(b) program.
Vacation and Sick Leave
All full-time residents receive four weeks of paid vacation per year.
Residents will receive seventeen (17) days of paid sick and health maintenance leave at the start of each one (1) year appointment period that will be broken down as twelve (12) business days and five (5) weekend days.
Weekends and Holidays
Days off during any rotation are typically on weekend days. Each rotation, residents will have at least one “golden weekend” with two consecutive days off. Each resident is granted one “holiday block” per year. This holiday block is granted as an additional 4 days off and may be taken during any significant holiday of their choosing.
On weekends and holidays, if a resident is not on call or is post-call, there are no clinical responsibilities at the hospital.
Meals
Meals are provided at Seattle Children’s Hospital, UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center cafeterias based on trainee schedules. In addition, lunch is provided during all resident noon conferences. (No meals are sponsored by pharmaceutical representatives.)
Parking and Transportation
Parking is free to all residents and fellows at Seattle Children's Hospital. Parking at UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center is available at a reduced rate for trainees. Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington shuttle networks provide direct connections between training sites and transit hubs. Use of this shuttle is free with Seattle Children’s ID.
Seattle Children’s award-winning Commuter Services department offers pediatric residents a wide range of transportation benefits including a transit pass, a subsidized on-site bike shop, and personal commute planning services. The ORCA transit pass allows for unlimited individual use on bus, light rail and other transit services throughout the region for a nominal annual fee. An on-site bike shop provides two free tune-ups per year as well as other services and discounts. Bike trails and residential streets make commuting by foot or bike safe and convenient from nearby neighborhoods.
Orientation
A paid, eight-day orientation prepares new residents for training at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington. Training and clinical work for first-year residents then commences on June 25, 2024, and ends June 24, 2025.
NRP and PALS Training
All Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification and recertification courses are provided free of charge.
Professional Liability Insurance
The University of Washington provides professional liability insurance coverage for residents with unlimited coverage for professional activities conducted in properly accredited settings.
Libraries and Information Services
The Health Sciences Libraries at University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Children's Library provide a wide array of onsite and online resources, including access to journals and textbooks, RedBook Online, Harriet Lane, UpToDate, ClinicalKey, VisualDx, BoardVitals and other tools, many of them available on mobile devices.
Pediatric residents have access to technology resources from both UW IT Connect and Seattle Children’s Information Technology. These include robust email and calendar tools, secure remote network access, file storage, free and low-cost software, online technology courses, use of audio/video equipment and extensive Wi-Fi networks.
Miscellaneous
Membership in the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) is paid for each year of training, with complimentary subscriptions to Pediatrics, Pediatrics in Review, PREP The Curriculum (board review questions) and other publications. Residents also enjoy tuition exemption at UW; enrollment priority at off-site childcare centers; and a variety of perks and discounts available to UW employees and to staff at Seattle Children’s.
